"adequate" means ...
"adequate" means the minimum needed not to cause acute disease. However, I assure you that a western diet is deficient in nutrients and not a healthy way to get nutrients.

WHAT? Typical ...
WHAT? Typical western societies are over carbohydrates/calories and under nutrition!!!!!!! Human life CAN be sustained on broccoli, spinach, and the many other edible plants.

Amino acids and Fatty acids found in plants are required in your diet. Carbohydrates are unnecessary.

@Paradise737

If ...
@Paradise737

If you're eating the right types of foods, it's impossible to overdose on a single nutrient. This is different than taking a bottle of Vit A. It's food. Plus, if you eat a variety of foods, like he suggestions, it's a non-issue. However, I'd love to see any reports you know of where someone overdosed on a vitamin because they ate too many nutrient dense foods!

Maybe, but what ...
Maybe, but what Fuhrman recommends is eating as many vitamins and minerals as possible, and it's naive to think that that's healthy, or even helpful.

The premise of the ...
The premise of the video is that the higher the ratio of vitamins/minerals to calories, the healthier you'll be.

All I'm saying is that makes no sense. Your body has a set requirement for vitamins and minerals and a set requirement for calories (including protein and essential fatty acids). You should aim to meet your nutritional needs, no more, no less.

@Paradise737

Ok, ...
@Paradise737

Ok, severely was the wrong word. But most people are deficient. It leads to a variety of health issues such as chronic fatigue, hypothyroidism, RA, MS, you name it. Get these people on a more nutrient rich diet, and it does wonders.

"Most people are ...
"Most people are severely deficient in many nutrients."

No--they're not. The Western diet is adequate in all vitamins and minerals. There may be some slight deficiencies in a couple common nutrients, but nothing "severe", and definitely nothing life-threatening. Ask any licensed physician how often they see a case of "severe nutrient deficiency."

The people who really are severely nutrient deficient are the ones who don't have access to enough food. Starving kids in Africa, or whatever.

@Paradise737

I ...
@Paradise737

I don't think you'd become calorie deficient, but Fuhrman is not saying eat only those foods with a 1000 rating or higher. Grains, healthy meat and dairy choices, etc. can give you what you need. This isn't an all or nothing thing. I don't think anyone is suggesting eating only kale all the time.
