My mom and I are going to a grill out and we’re supposed to bring a side dish, but we don’t want to bring any dishes with mayo or miracle whip in them, because the family doesn’t like it. So what are some other options? It can be a dinner-style type or a dessert type.
I said NO MAYO OR MIRACLE WHIP

macoroni and cheese
or a nice salad

PS – You can look up recipes without Mayo or M Whip here on the internet. Slaw is always a crowd pleaser…;-)

Oh I came across this recipe the other day and its perfect for hot summer days and I think I would actually serve this as a condiment on, like fish or chicken
Cool as a Cucumber, Melon and Tomato Salad

2 cups cantaloupe, cubed
1 cup cucumber, seeded and chopped
1 cup cherry tomatoes (or chopped tomato)
1/2 cup red onion, diced
1 tablespoon olive oil
2 tablespoons fresh lime or lemon juice
fresh ground black pepper,
a light sprinkle of sea salt
1/2 cup fresh mint, coarsely chopped
feta cheese, crumbled

Toss it all together and let meld for an hour or so in the refrigerator.

bring a pasta salad containing fresh tomatoes and cucumbers that has been tossed w/ a bottled italian salad dressing or hoemmade vinaigrette; or a potato salad tossed w/ a homemade vinaigrette (rather than a mayo-based dressing)

Baked beans are always good, as is corn on the cob (boil or steam, brush w/ butter, sprinkle w/ S&P and parmesan chz– MMm!)

Watermelons in a cooler covered w/ ice are always a hit. Don’t forget a really long, sharp knife!

My favourite is potato salad but you don’t like the mayo so that suggestion is not what you are looking for. I make a simple plain cold rice salad with corn, peas, shallots and a little lemon juice. Very filling, simple, tasty and vegetarians enjoy it too.

grilled potatoes are good. Wrapp in tin foil, bake till potatoes are soft. Bring sour cream. Also, there’s a rice dish.. cook rice, then add 1 cup sour cream and 1 cup cottage cheese. mix in with rice. layer the top with cheese, layer again and top with cheese. micro till cheese melts.

You could make a pasta salad. They’re really easy, and everyone loves pasta! http://www.foodnetwork.com/search/delegate.do?fnSearchString=pasta+salad&fnSearchType=site
This has a lot of recipes..
You could also try garlic bread, a tossed salad, chicken or buffalo wings, or even a potato dish, without the mayo. http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ina-garten/dill-fingerling-potatoes-recipe/index.html :)

Take buttered pasta with dill and spring vegetables. Or something easier is steamed corn on the cob with lemon butter and cracked black pepper. Or even a couscous dish with cashews and parsley.

I have a couple that are fun and different.

Black Bean Salad
1 Can Black Beans (drained and rinsed)
1 Can Whole Kernel Corn (drained)
1 Fresh Tomato diced
1 or 2 green onions chopped
1/2 red onion finely chopped (more or less to taste)
Combine all ingredients in a bowl and drizzle with Italian Salad Dressing to provide a very thin coating to all ingredients
Refrigerate until time to serve.

OR

Pickled Cucumber and Onion
1 Pint Apple Cider Vinegar
2 cups sugar
Mix until sugar is dissolved
1 red onion sliced in 1/4 inch slices
1-2 cucumbers peeled and sliced
Add vegetables to liquid and cover
refrigerate at least a couple of hours. overnight is better
serve chilled

Have a great time!!!

My family loves when I make taco dip. It is pretty simple. You just use cream cheese, sour cream and taco seasoning mix to start. Let the cream cheese soften and then blend the three together. Spread it thinly in a pan or serving dish and layer chopped tomatoes, lettuce, black olives, shredded cheddar cheese and onions (if you like) over the top of it and serve with tortilla chips. Also you can never go wrong with a fresh fruit salad! Good luck

Pasta Salad with Italian Dressing is great and doesn’t need mayo.

There’s always, Baked Beans or a Three Bean Salad, both are yummy!

Or how About just cutting up some fresh veggies and bringing a Veggie Tray and mix up some Sour Cream and Ranch Dressing Mix for the dip.

A Fresh Fruit Tray is always a hit or you could always make a nice Fresh Fruit Salad, always great in the Summer. If you really want to be fancy, you could do the Watermelon Thing (looks like a watermelon basket) with Fresh Fruit inside.

For dessert, why not Brownies, Chocolate Chip Cookies or Rice Krispie Treats?

There are tons of things you can bring that don’t need Mayo or Miracle Whip, just use your imagination or think of other grill outs you been to and what they had there and bring something you liked.

Good Luck!

I always take corn on the cob. I break each ear in half, cook in boiling water for 4-5 minutes; drain. Then wrap each one in a piece of foil with 1 pat of butter and a sprinkle of sugar. You can stack them in a large pan and place them on the grill when you get to the event. Never had a complaint yet.

OR
Texas Caviar
2 (15 ounce) cans black beans, rinsed and drained
2 (15 ounce) cans pinto beans, rinsed and drained
2 (15 ounce) cans white corn, rinsed and drained
1 (4 ounce) can chopped green chiles, undrained
1 jalapeno chile pepper, seeded and finely chopped (optional)
1 red bell pepper – cored, seeded and finely chopped
1 green bell pepper – cored, seeded and finely chopped
1 small red onion, finely chopped
1 bunch cilantro leaves, finely chopped
1/2 cup rice vinegar
1/2 cup olive oil
1/3 cup white sugar
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
Mix the black beans, pinto beans, white corn, green chiles, jalapeno pepper, red and green bell peppers, red onion, and cilantro together in a large bowl.
2. To make the dressing, stir the rice vinegar, olive oil, sugar, and garlic powder together in a pan. Bring to a boil, then remove from heat, and cool. Pour dressing over bean mixture, and toss to mix evenly.
Taste and adjust seasoning.

SIMPLE BAKED ONION SIDE DISH

2 layers chopped or sliced onions
grated cheese
1 can Campbell’s Cream of Mushroom Soup
milk (enough to soften soup)
garlic powder
potato chips, crumbled

Select a small to medium sized casserole or oven proof baking dish. Spray with non-stick spray or wipe with melted butter.
Peel, chop or slice enough onions to cover the bottom of the baking dish so that you will have a double layer of onions on the bottom. Sprinkle the onions with enough grated cheese to cover and a light sprinkle of garlic powder.

In a medium bowl, combine soup with enough milk to soften the soup to pouring consistency. Pour over the onion and cheese evenly. Sprinkle with crumbled potato chips.

Note: This is even easier to make if you use a food processor to slice or chop the onions.

Kids love to prepare this dish, too!

Bake at 350°F for 30 minutes.
