Many groups in the …
Many groups in the late 50s and 60s (and some soloists) had a falsetto lead: Four Seasons, Tremolos, Diamonds, Jimmy Jones, Lou Christie, Del Shannon, Brian Wilson, etc. Groups like the Diamonds with a falsetto and the lowest bass you ever heard were quite striking!

Geeez, lighten up …
Geeez, lighten up some of you folks! The things all these groups from that era have in common is the simplicity of the music and beat, the lack of sophistication and everyone, band and audience, is having a ton of fun! Pop music performers today are too full of themselves, overly serious and just flat out boring.

Ahhhhh. Bubble Puppy – from Ft Worth along with Bloodrock (DOA). Use to listen to them on “Underground” radio in 69 and 70.

@lthpd: LOL, well …
@lthpd: LOL, well yeah, I knew ALL of those musicians and singers hailed from Texas but I didn’t know Larry Henley came from TX (just found out that was his name). Also Bobby Fuller came from El Paso. In the late ’60s, two bands called The Bubble Puppy and Bloodrock to mention some lesser knowns.

Yep. Texas has had …
Yep. Texas has had a few “rockers”. A dude named Buddy Holly, Sir Douglas Quintet, the Winters Brothers, etc., etc. Lol. The Newbeats “lead” singer lived in the piney woods of Southeast Texas. Oh, yeah, and a chick named Janis Joplin. From Pt. Arthur, Texas.

@lthpd: Good gosh, …
@lthpd: Good gosh, you mean THIS came out of TEXAS?! I’ve known The Newbeats since I was just a kid (33 now) with my mom’s original 45 of “Run Baby Run” which I played to death. I was shocked enough at about age 22 when I picked up a copy of their record and thought, “Uh where’s the chick?” But now to SEE them perform and find out they were from TEXAS?! Oh that’s TOO MUCH MAN. WOW.

I guess I’m in the minority, I always thought it was a white woman with a soulful voice, especially since the background guys were obviously white.

Like a lot of posters here, I thought this was a black group. This song came out one summer while I was in college (mid-60’s), and I recall the little black kids in my town loved this song.

When this song first arrived on the scene, I actually thought it was a black woman singing it. It blew my mind to find it was a white male doing it, it totally floored me.

I too always wondered what his talking voice sounded like, lol.
